North Florida Growing Note: American Sycamore grows well in the Florida Panhandle and is especially suited to moist locations, low areas, creek banks, pond edges, and places that experience periodic flooding. It tolerates wet feet better than many common shade trees. Although it handles temporary standing water, it grows best where the soil is moist and receives some oxygen rather than remaining deeply submerged year-round.

American Sycamore becomes an extremely large tree. Plant it well away from houses, septic systems, sidewalks, driveways, power lines, and underground utilities. Allow plenty of space for its wide canopy, extensive roots, falling leaves, peeling bark, and seed balls.
